St. Veronica's Guild Update: Fall 2020
The pandemic has not slowed down the sisters of St. Veronica Guild! We are busy helping our ministries - The Church of the Common Ground, The Church of the Holy Comforter, Crossroads Ministries, and Emmaus House. We are aware more than ever that homelessness doesn’t go away and we need to care for our brothers and sisters in good times as well as bad.
August is BCM Food Drive Month – Please Donate!
August is food drive month at the Cathedral in support of Buckhead Christian Ministry’s client choice pantry. While COVID-19 has caused the temporary pause of pantry operations, BCM’s work to assist the working poor in our community is ongoing and more important than ever. Much of its current focus is delivering housing support as clients cope with layoffs and job losses, but food assistance remains a critical need and BCM’s reserve funding for the eventual reopening of its pantry is extremely important.

Antiques Show Beneficiary to Present at OFSS
This Sunday, May 17, at 10:10 a.m. the Cathedral Antiques Show welcomes representatives from next year’s beneficiary, City of Refuge, to talk about their mission and impact at Old Fashioned Sunday School. City of Refuge was founded by Bruce Deel in 1997 with a mission to transform the lives of individuals and communities in Atlanta and beyond. The faith-based nonprofit is housed in a 210,000-square-foot warehouse on the Westside in the 30314 zip code: a neighborhood where 60% of murders in Atlanta happen and nearly 40% of the residents live below the federal poverty line. The grant received from the 2021 Cathedral Antiques Show will go toward renovating the 180 Degree Kitchen, a fully operational culinary environment where meals are prepped and served three times a day, 365 days a year.

The Camels are Coming: St. Veronica's Epiphany Toiletry Drive
The Epiphany camels are coming to the Atrium January 5-12 to collect your donations of personal care items for the four Atlanta ministries St. Veronica’s Guild supports. As the Wise Men on their camels brought gifts for the Christ Child, follow the camels and bring your gifts of new, unopened individual and family size items. Your gifts will help low income women, men, and children served by Emmaus House, Crossroads Community Ministries, Holy Comforter Church Friendship Center, and Church of the Common Ground. The wise women of St. Veronica’s Guild welcome all unopened personal care items you get when you travel or shop this holiday season.

St. Veronica's Collecting Toiletries
St. Veronica’s Guild would like to thank all those who have participated in this year’s toiletry drive for four Episcopal ministries in the Atlanta area which serve people who are poor, homeless, or have mental and emotional disabilities. Six times this year more than 200 pounds of donated and purchased personal care items were sent to these ministries. For example, the ministry that serves people who are homeless requested 100 each of soap, shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, toothbrush, deodorant, and washcloth and lesser amounts of razors, combs, and emery boards. The other three ministries requested different quantities of these, some needing individual sizes and others family-size packages of diapers, feminine hygiene products and white socks.

The Road Back to You
Have you ever wondered if you are living your authentic self as God created you to be? The Enneagam is an ancient personality type system used to understand how we are wired, both positively and negatively. In this six-week book club hosted by St. Clare’s Guild, Canon Cathy Zappa and Caroline Wallace will facilitate a Christian approach using The Road Back to You – An Enneagram Journey to Self-Discovery by Ian Cron and Suzanne Stabile. In discovering one’s true self, we can discern how to use our unique God given gifts for the good of others and the world, develop a greater compassion and understanding for others, and grow in our love for God.
Join St. Monica's Guild!
St. Monica’s Guild is a group of mothers with young children ranging from newborn to middle school age. Our focuses are spiritual growth, service, and fellowship. This year, we will discuss The Year of Biblical Womanhood by Rachel Held Evans, available for purchase in the Cathedral Book Store. This fun and thought-provoking read will be the focus of discussion for our evening programs on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month, but if you have not read the book – come anyway!
Help Support BCM’s “Client Choice” Food Pantry
St. Anne’s Guild, as ambassadors for Buckhead Christian Ministry (BCM) at the Cathedral, will again be grateful for your support in August of the ministry’s new “client choice” food pantry. Last year, the Cathedral took the lead by raising over $9,000 in seed money for this exciting concept. Then, in our February drive, your gifts exceeded that record in the amount of $10,618. Today, thanks to your generosity, BCM has completed the necessary physical build-out of their pantry space and purchased software that will allow clients to shop for their own food instead of receiving pre-selected food bags. Also, more fresh foods can be offered thanks to new partnerships with local suppliers and farmers. BCM is also happy to announce the recent hiring of Robyn Hazelrigs as its food pantry manager. She will implement every aspect of the new pantry concept, especially the option for clients to choose food items via a touchscreen computer.
Help Support BCM’s “Client Choice” Food Pantry
BCM now asks for monetary donations in our semi-annual drives (August and February) because they are carefully transitioning to the systematic purchase of specific foods from selected suppliers in order to control quality and inventory. Its purchasing power with your donations of $20 or more will be substantial.
Donate Toiletries for Local Ministries
Summer is coming with travel and shopping, so please remember to collect both travel and standard size containers of personal care items. St. Veronica's Guild will pack these items for use by Emmaus House, Holy Comforter's Friendship House, Church of the Common Ground and Crossroads Ministry. Recipients will benefit from your contribution of things you may take for granted each morning. Toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, deodorant, and soap are so necessary to preserving human dignity. St. Veronica also collects combs, razors, diapers, feminine hygiene products, white socks, and lotion.
