Welcome, Caroline Robinson!

We are delighted to welcome the Cathedral’s newest staff member, Caroline Robinson, who joins us as Associate Organist-Choirmaster! She will oversee our Cathedral Chorister program, and she looks forward to meeting and working with new and returning Choristers soon, in whatever manner circumstances allow. She will also share organ playing and accompanying responsibilities with Jack Mitchener – under normal circumstances for some 250 services annually, 150 of which include the Cathedral choirs – and will assist broadly in the many facets of the Cathedral’s music ministry.

New Associate Organist-Choirmaster Named

We are delighted to announce that Caroline Robinson has accepted the Cathedral’s call to become our next associate organist-choirmaster! Her principal duties will be to oversee our Cathedral Chorister program, to share organ playing responsibilities for some 250 services annually (approximately 150 of which necessitate accompanying the Cathedral choirs), and to assist broadly in the many facets of the Cathedral’s music ministry.

Atlanta Symphony Brass Holiday Concert

The Atlanta Symphony Brass returns to present its third annual holiday concert, Monday, December 9, at 7:30 p.m., certain to be one of the most delightful and thrilling musical events of the season again this year! The program will feature some of the finest arrangements for brass ensemble and percussion, including traditional holiday carols and beloved standards from the symphonic orchestra repertoire.

Advent Lessons and Carols 2019

Our service of Lessons and Carols is adapted from the famous carol service at King’s College, Cambridge, which has become popular worldwide since World War II through annual radio broadcasts on Christmas Eve. For our Advent service we include the ancient O Antiphons, one after each of the seven readings.

Heavenly Music for All Saints' Sunday

On Sunday, November 3 at 4 p.m., the Cathedral Choir will offer the Requiem by Maurice Duruflé, which is unquestionably one of the most beautiful and deeply profound sacred choral works in the entire history of music. This work is most often performed on concert stages in North America, so this will be a rare opportunity to experience it within the context for which it was written – a fully choral service of Holy Communion. Many people will attend the service to remember the life of a loved one who has passed into life eternal during the past year, and hear their names read aloud during the prayers, but this is transcendently beautiful music that offers hope and a palpable glimpse of heaven to all. The full Cathedral Choir will be joined by a chamber orchestra, underwritten as a gift from our Friends of Cathedral Music, using Duruflé’s orchestration for strings, harp, trumpets, timpani, and organ.

Bach: Magnificat! and Orchestral Suite No. 3

The Atlanta Baroque Orchestra once again teams up with the Cathedral Schola to present one of J.S. Bach’s most celebratory works. Prepare for a dazzling display of solos and choruses enhanced by a colorful array of instruments including trumpets, timpani, woodwinds and strings. Paired with the Magnificat is Bach’s Orchestral Suite No. 3 in D Major, a spirited tour de force including the soulfully atmospheric Air popularly known as the “Air on the G String.”

The Choir of Trinity College, Cambridge is one of the most acclaimed adult choirs in the world, and we are delighted to welcome them back to Atlanta following their performances to capacity audiences here in 2012 and 2015.

Afternoon Recitals Resume this Sunday

This Sunday, September 8, our weekly Sunday afternoon recital series resumes at 3:15 p.m. with an improvisation on the stained glass windows of the Cathedral by our Organist and Associate Choirmaster, Dr. Patrick A. Scott. We hope to have Patrick return many times in the future to perform on our recital series, but with his departure from the Cathedral at the end of this month, this may be the last opportunity for a while to hear him improvise in his typical masterly fashion. Don’t miss it!

I Knew This Would Happen …

Patrick Scott, our beloved Organist and Associate Choirmaster, has taken a new job as the Director of Music and Organist at Grace-St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Memphis, Tennessee. He will be leaving us at the end of September.

Musikgarten Allegro Classes for Children through age 8

Using play, movement, singing, and instruments, Allegro and Musikgarten classes help younger children develop musical skills and knowledge as well as an appreciation for music. Children and their parents find this to be a wonderful introduction to the music program at the Cathedral.

The 32 Beethoven Piano Sonatas

In celebration of Ludwig van Beethoven’s 250th birthday next year, pianist (and Cathedral coordinator for music) Timothy Gunter will perform all 32 piano sonatas in a series of eight recitals this summer and next. The piano sonatas of Beethoven have been regarded for more than a century as one of the hallmarks of the piano repertoire. The old saying among pianists for generations has been that if you can play all of the Beethoven piano sonatas, you should be able to play anything.

Is the Cathedral Choir for You?

Do you know someone who might enjoy singing in the Cathedral Choir? Perhaps you yourself? Contrary to the myth that our choirs consist solely of paid professionals, nearly 80 percent of our Cathedral Choir members are committed volunteers. If you have some ability to read music, a good sense of pitch, are able to commit to faithful attendance at rehearsals and services, and have an interest in singing in the specialized kind of choral ensemble that ours are – or someone you know matches this description – please contact the music office 404-365-1050 or music@cathedralATL.org to set up an audition. Everyone should sing in church, of course, but happily some people are called to this special music ministry. Make an appointment now, and together we can discern whether Cathedral Choir is right for you!

Cathedral Choirs Uncorked!

Join us as we hang up our cassocks and let our hair down to show a side of ourselves you will never see on Sunday morning! The musical feast will be augmented by desserts and beverages for your enjoyment, and a silent auction with treasures from the vaults of some of our wonderfully generous parishioners.

Choral Eucharist Sunday at 4 p.m.

In lieu of our weekly service of Choral Evensong, the Cathedral will feature a Choral Eucharist this Sunday at 4 p.m. Sung by the Cathedral Choir, music for the service will include Ralph Vaughan Williams’s Mass in G minor, along with C.H.H. Parry’s Blest Pair of Sirens. Come and worship in our marvelous sacred space with some great 20th century sacred music this Sunday afternoon. This will be the Cathedral’s final 4 o’clock service for this season. Sunday afternoon recitals and services will resume on September 8.

A Meditation on the Passion of Christ

On Palm Sunday, April 14, at 4 p.m., the Cathedral Schola will present A Meditation on the Passion of Christ, with Carols. One of the most profound choral services of the year, this meditation employs lessons and carols, spirituals, anthems, motets, and congregational hymns to illuminate the Passion of Christ, which is retold using biblical narratives from Mark, Matthew, and John, sung to some of the most ancient plainchant known to the Church.

Gloria! – the Music of Antonio Vivaldi

Lovers of Vivaldi, now is your chance to hear two of his most beloved works and be introduced to what will soon become new favorites! The Atlanta Baroque Orchestra and Cathedral Schola, with Nathan Medley and Evan Few, present Gloria! – the Music of Antonio Vivaldi, March 15 and 16.

J.S. Bach to Wolfgang Mozart: A Little Night Music

Although J.S. Bach and W.A. Mozart were not innovators of a new style, they both brought established styles to perfection and rightly remain among the most famous composers to this day. World-renowned Dutch cellist and conductor Jaap ter Linden joins us as guest director for this blockbuster program that features Bach’s virtuosic Fifth Brandenburg Concerto contrasted with his dark and soulful Violin Concerto in A minor, and Mozart’s famously effervescent Eine kleine Nachtmusik featuring a star-studded line-up of soloists.

Christmas Lessons and Carols 2018

The Cathedral Schola will lead our annual Festival of Nine Christmas Lessons and Carols by candlelight this Sunday, December 23 at 4 p.m. Biblical readings narrating the prophecy and birth of Jesus are illuminated by congregational carols and choral music of the Christmas season.

Choral Requiem Eucharist on All Saints’ Sunday

All are invited to attend our annual Choral Eucharist on All Saints’ Sunday, November 4 at 4 p.m. This year we will observe this holy occasion with the ancient and image-rich texts of the Requiem as set to music by Gabriel Fauré. His is one of the most beloved and frequently sung works in the sacred repertoire, yet it is rarely experienced in the context for which it was written: a fully choral service of Communion in celebration of the life of someone who has passed into life eternal. The orchestra, underwritten by our Friends of Cathedral Music, will use Fauré’s original, most intimate orchestration for strings, harp, French horns, and timpani. This is music of transcendent beauty, which generations of Christians have found to offer a profound glimpse of the hope, peace, and surpassing joy of heaven.
