Why I Give: Mary Elizabeth Lively

Growing up as the daughter of an Episcopal priest, church was simply part of life. The Episcopal Church has always been woven into my story, from my earliest memories living on the mountain in Sewanee while my dad attended seminary, to the many years that followed in parish life. For a long time, being Episcopalian was something I inherited, something that shaped me but was not yet fully my own.

That began to change when I moved to Atlanta almost two years ago. For the first time, I felt called to find a church home where I could be known not as “the priest’s daughter,” but as a parishioner in my own right. From my first service at the Cathedral of St. Philip, I knew I had found that home.

Through the Young Professionals group, I have found some of my closest friends. Returning to serve as an acolyte, after nearly ten years and after only ever serving with my dad, was both meaningful and joyful. I have also been blessed to help co-lead a youth acolyte group and serve with youth confirmation. These experiences have deepened my faith and allowed me to participate in the life of the Church in ways that are truly my own.

The Cathedral has shaped my Christian identity, grounding me in community, service, and spiritual growth. My life in Atlanta would not be what it is today without this parish.

I give because this church has given so much to me. I give to support the ministries that nurture young people, to strengthen the community that has welcomed me so fully, and to help ensure that future generations will find a home here just as I have.
