Tonight we feast on some of England’s most beloved choral favorites from the late nineteenth and mid-twentieth centuries. These works are rarely performed in North America, and it is all music that one will fall in love with at first hearing. Join the Cathedral Choir and Schola, with organ and orchestra, for an extraordinary opportunity to hear these enduring masterpieces.

The pre-concert talk at 6:30 p.m. on the evening of the performance will address the literary themes of the profound texts that will be sung. The "blessed pair of sirens" sings heavenly praise! Voice and verse blend wondrously. Jeremiah Cawley (one of our talented Cathedral staff singers, and a candidate for a Doctoral of Musical Arts degree) will reflect on verse from Shakespeare’s musings on the Music of the Spheres, from Milton’s heavenly At a Solemn Music, and from W.H. Auden’s poignant and affecting The Twelve. These brilliant texts parallel the ancient canticles, Te Deum and Magnificat, which throughout history have connected us by voice and verse to the great company of heaven who forever sing God’s praise. Please join us for a discussion of these remarkable texts, the politics and history that birthed them, and the music given them by masters of the English choral tradition.

Program:
Ralph Vaughan Williams, Serenade to Music
William Walton, The Twelve
Gerald Finzi, Magnificat
William Walton, Coronation Te Deum
C. Hubert H. Parry, Blest pair of sirens
