The Reverend Cathy Zappa Accepts Our Call to be New Canon at the Cathedral

An article from the Cathedral Times.

I am thrilled to report that the Reverend Cathy Zappa has been called to be Canon for Spirituality and Mission at the Cathedral of St. Philip! Cathy is presently ministering in a dual capacity, as part-time priest at Church of the Holy Spirit, in Cumming, and as Program Director of the Theological Studies program at Arrendale Prison, Alto, Georgia. She has worked closely in the chaplaincy programs of the women’s prison system in Atlanta.

Some parishioners at the Cathedral may actually remember Cathy Zappa from a few years ago, when she attended the Cathedral and taught classes here, and served with Church of the Common Ground. In addition, she led an Education for Ministry program here during that time. We were the parish that actually sponsored her candidacy to be ordained an Episcopal priest; perhaps it is only fitting that we are eager to have her minister here in that capacity!

Before graduating with an M.Div. from Candler School of Theology at Emory in 2010, Cathy Zappa earned an M.A. from University of Texas in 1997 (in German literature) and a B.A. from University of Texas in 2000, majoring in English and intending a career in education. She also has a B.A. from University of Georgia (1994) in German. Her high school education was here in Atlanta, and she lives near the Cathedral even now, with her husband and three children (ages 13, 11, and 9).

It will be a delight to welcome Cathy into the ministry that all canons of the Cathedral share: pastoring, preaching, and presiding. In particular, however, the Canon for Spirituality and Mission will oversee various spirituality and prayer groups, including our women’s prayer and women’s Bible studies. Furthermore, the Canon for Spirituality and Mission will represent and inspire the outreach and mission life of our parish. Our outreach and mission ministries stem from the many varieties of small groups and constituencies of the Cathedral, and I believe we have found someone who can continue to inspire and coordinate those efforts.

Though Cathy’s official first day is not until December 15, she WILL be here at the Cathedral on December 7 for our Annual Parish Meeting. Welcome her, and join our excitement!
