The Cathedral of St. Philip - Atlanta, GA

Meet George Maxwell !

An article from the Cathedral Times
by the Very Reverend Samuel G. Candler,
Dean of the Cathedral of St. Philip

What a thrill it is to welcome George Maxwell among us! This Sunday, January 9, will be the first Sunday of ministry for George, who is our new Canon for Congregational Life. That title means a lot; George will be among all of us for a time, learning who and what comprises our parish life. He will be our primary point of contact for dozens of our small groups, from prayer and study groups to fellowship and support groups. Not only will he teach and preach among us; he will contribute energy and creativity to the way we structure ourselves as a vibrant congregation.

George Maxwell has been a successful lawyer for much of his life. Raised in the household of an Episcopal priest (his father was rector of Christ Church, Savannah), he has always been active in the church. But his first vocation was law. He has worked as a law partner at Powell and Goldstein, and most recently at Alston and Bird. But God called him to ordained ministry, and he has just finished his Masters of Divinity degree at Emory University. In fact, he is not yet ordained a priest; but his pastoral, teaching, and organizational skills are strong. He will be a true asset to the Cathedral.

George is married to Sally Weaver, and he has three teen-aged children from a former marriage: Jessie (graduating this year from Westminster), David (at Woodward), and Peter (at Pace). It will be wonderful to welcome all of them to life at the Cathedral of St. Philip. For the next several months, George will be making calls, visiting, and getting to know the wide breadth of life at the Cathedral. Welcome him!

In addition, George Maxwell's first sermon at the Cathedral will be this Sunday, January 9, at the 8:45 service . He will address the Dean's Forum class on the following Sunday, January 16, presenting his spiritual autobiography and Credo (statement of belief and Christian mission).
