from the Very. Rev. Sam Candler
I am so glad to be dean of the Cathedral of St. Philip, in both temperate and intemperate times! In both clement weather and inclement weather! And I am glad that we are open, as much and as often as possible.
Here is my usual and occasional reminder of our custom during inclement weather. First: Be safe! Do not try to drive to, or get to, the cathedral if conditions are unsafe or dangerous.
Second: we are usually open. Because so many of us—parishioners and staff—live close by, we can often walk to the cathedral even when roads are not passable. And many of us like to come to church! It is a beautiful place of prayer, for all people, in all conditions and circumstances.
The dean and rector of the cathedral parish is the one responsible for all events and teaching here, and also the one responsible for keeping our campus open and available for prayer. And I am glad for that responsibility!
Now, the weekend of Sunday, January 25, 2026, presents some uncertain weather! But the excellent “Cathedral Giving By Design” will occur as scheduled, on Friday and Saturday. Our Sunday services will occur, even if only a small number of people are here; and there will be online livestream video of those services if we have power. Our Monday, January 26 funeral for Den Coleman has been postponed to February 9 at 10 a.m. The Monday funeral for J.D. Humphries will occur as scheduled at 2 p.m.
Grace and peace to you during these times! As usual, I caution against over-anxiety; and I counsel safety first. Please pray with us, wherever you are, this Sunday!

The Very Reverend Samuel G. Candler
Dean of the Cathedral of St. Philip
