The Choirs of the Cathedral of St. Philip proudly present Choirs Uncorked! Join us as we hang up our cassocks and let our hair down to show a side of ourselves not seen on a normal Sunday morning. We will be showcasing many styles from 42nd Street to Studio 54 to the French Quarter and back again. This musical feast will also include snacks and beverages for your enjoyment. Our Silent Auction will feature fine treasures from the vaults of our community.
The Choir of Trinity College, Cambridge, England

The Choir of Trinity College, Cambridge is one of the most acclaimed collegiate choirs in the world, and we are delighted to welcome them back to Atlanta following their previous performances here to capacity audiences, most recently in 2019. The choir pursues a vigorous recording and international touring schedule, in addition to singing several choral services in the College Chapel each week during university term. Trinity College’s choral tradition dates back to the 14th century, and they were recently designated one of the top five choirs in the world by Gramophone magazine.
The program celebrates choral music from Thomas Tallis, the grandfather of the English choral tradition, through to music of today including Dame Judith Weir, Master of the King’s Music and an Honorary Fellow at Trinity College. The program also includes J.S. Bach Komm, Jesu, komm, the Gustav Holst Nunc Dimittis and works by John Taverner and Herbert Howells.
Voted the fifth best choir in the world in Gramophone magazine’s ‘20 Greatest Choirs’, the Choir of Trinity College Cambridge comprises around thirty Choral Scholars and an Organ Scholar, all of whom are students at the University.

The ABO continues its 10th-anniversary celebrations as Artists-in-Residence at the Cathedral of St. Philip with J.S. Bach’s glorious Cantata 80, Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott (“A mighty fortress is our God”). It was by collaborating on this masterpiece in 2013 that the bond which continues to flourish between the ABO and our Friends of Cathedral Music first began to be forged. Rounding out this all-Bach program are the monumental Orchestral Suite No. 1 in C Major and the selections from Cantata 29, Wir danken dir, Gott, featuring Cathedral organist Chase Loomer joined by trumpets, timpani, winds, strings, and the Cathedral Schola.

As one of the world’s leading vocal ensembles, renowned for its passion and precision, we are thrilled to present this “devastatingly beautiful” (Gramophone Magazine), award-winning choir for its first concert ever in Atlanta. Under the direction of Nigel Short, Tenebrae performs at major festivals and venues across the globe, from the BBC Proms and Wigmore Hall to the Sydney Festival, and has enjoyed collaborations with some of the UK’s leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Academy of Ancient Music, and Britten Sinfonia. Having earned international acclaim for its interpretations of choral works from the Renaissance through to contemporary masterpieces and its commissions of new music, this is certain to be one of the most sublime musical events in Atlanta this season.

Enjoy an evening of magnificent music and world-class musicianship as the members of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra’s world-renowned brass and percussion sections return to the Cathedral of St. Philip to present their ninth annual holiday concert. The program will feature traditional holiday carols and beloved standards from the symphonic orchestra repertoire in some of the finest arrangements for brass ensemble and percussion. Modeled on the beloved carol service broadcast each Christmas Eve from King’s College, Cambridge, this is our most popular choral service of the year. Ancient prophecies foretelling the coming of a Messiah and the Gospel accounts of the birth of Jesus are illumined by extra-biblical texts, anthems and Christmas carols that have inspired composers, choirs, and worshippers throughout the world and across time. For those who are traveling at Christmas and wish first to celebrate with loved ones here at home, and for all who hold the music and message of Christmas dear, this service is a meaningful and joyous way to celebrate the season. England Pilgrimage Preview Concert

The Cathedral Choir has accepted invitations to serve as choir-in-residence to sing the daily services at Canterbury and Winchester cathedrals July 12-23. Singing the daily round of services in these awe-inspiring edifices is a sublime, even transformative experience. Tonight’s concert will be an opportunity to hear some of the magnificent repertoire that the choir will offer there this summer, while also supporting their efforts to raise the funds needed to travel.

The Passion of Joan of Arc

In the manner audiences experienced movies a hundred years ago, Chase Loomer will improvise an accompaniment to this 1928 French silent film, which is based on the actual record of the trial of Joan of Arc. Employing the tonal resources of the Cathedral’s magnificent Aeolian-Skinner organ, his extraordinary gift for improvisation will bring contemporary life to what is widely regarded by cinephiles as one of the greatest movies of all time.

A Meditation on the Passion of Christ, with Carols

The Choir of King’s College, Cambridge

Founded in the 15th century, over the past hundred years the Choir of King’s College, Cambridge has become truly world-famous. Millions listen to its annual Christmas Eve service, A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols. The choristers, choral scholars, and organ scholars study at King’s College School and the University of Cambridge and perform the daily choral services during the University term. The Choir performs also regularly in the United Kingdom’s major concert halls. They have appeared at the BBC Proms, collaborated with the Academy of Ancient Music, Britten Sinfonia, and the BBC Concert Orchestra, and they present an annual Christmas concert in London with the Philharmonia Orchestra. International tours have taken them overseas since 1936, with performances in Asia, Australia, across Europe, and the USA. The Cathedral of St. Philip is delighted to present the Choir’s first concert ever in Atlanta!

On the heels of America’s 250th Anniversary, the ABO presents a musical soirée modeled after those held in Charleston, South Carolina, during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Organized by “acts,” the repertoire spans several genres, from solo keyboard to full orchestra. Fortepianist David Breitman joins us for a program featuring favorite pieces imported from Europe by J.C. Bach, Thomas Arne, Felice Giardini, and Muzio Clementi, as well as a Quintet by J.F. Peter, a Moravian newly settled in the Colonies.

Atlanta Summer Organ Festival Recital: David Higgs
Wednesday, June 23, 2027 at 7:30 p.m.
One of America’s leading concert organists, David Higgs is Professor of Organ and Chair of the Organ Department at the Eastman School of Music. He performs extensively throughout the United States and abroad, regularly inaugurates major new instruments, appears at organ festivals and competitions around the world, and has collaborated with such ensembles as the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, Orpheus Ensemble, Chanticleer, and Empire Brass. In addition to his significant performing career, Mr. Higgs has distinguished himself as a pedagogue. His students have won prizes in prestigious international competitions and hold important positions in leading academic and religious institutions. His recordings may be found on Delos International, Pro Organo, Arsis, Loft, and Gothic Records.
