The Rev. Canon George Maxwell

The Rev. George M. Maxwell, Jr. serves as vicar of the Cathedral of St. Philip, where he oversees the Cathedral’s operations and guides the development of its staff, programs, and ministries. His ministry within the Cathedral also includes leading small groups during the week, teaching the Old Fashioned Sunday School in Child Hall on Sunday mornings, and writing an occasional series of fictional reflections styled as Letters to a Young Episcopalian.
Beyond the Cathedral, George serves as President of the Standing Committee of the Diocese of Atlanta, treasurer and former chair of the Wright House Foundation, and a founding faculty member of Learning to Lead (L2L), a diocesan training course that applies Adaptive Leadership principles to the church. He also consults with parishes in the Diocese of Atlanta during rector searches, assists the Episcopal Church in Title IV pastoral responses, and serves on the Advisory Board of the Georgia Justice Project, where he has also chaired the board. He is an active member of the Shalem Society for Contemplative Leadership, having completed advanced training in clergy spiritual life, leadership, and spiritual guidance.
George’s past roles include teaching in the Certificate in Spiritual Direction program at Columbia Theological Seminary, serving as adjunct faculty at the Candler School of Theology (Emory University), teaching for the Episcopal Church’s CREDO program, and chairing the Bishop’s Advisory Council for the Church of the Common Ground.
In 2011, George was inducted into the Martin Luther King, Jr. International Board of Preachers at Morehouse College. He earned his Master of Divinity with a Certificate in Anglican Studies from Emory University in 2004 and served as interim director of Emmaus House before joining the Cathedral staff in 2005.
Before ordination, George practiced corporate law in Atlanta for twenty years, leaving Alston & Bird in 2001. He is a graduate of the University of North Carolina and Duke University School of Law.
