Inspired by Atlanta’s World Series Championship Braves, the ABO takes the field for an All-Star lineup in 2022-23! Internationally acclaimed Dutch cellist and conductor Jaap ter Linden takes the mound for our spectacular season opener, expertly guiding the ABO through a rousing program of music from the Classical era for strings and winds. Eighteenth-century composer Marianna Martines, a welcome addition to the composers’ lineup, is in a league of her own with her sparkling Symphony in C Major; and ABO’s own Erin Ellis takes the spotlight in Haydn’s Cello Concerto in C Major. Fan-favorite composer W.A. Mozart delivers the closer, his youthful Symphony in A Major, K. 114.

GABRIEL FAURÉ, REQUIEM
A Choral Requiem Eucharist for All Faithful Departed

Cathedral Choir with orchestra

Caroline Robinson & Jack Mitchener, organ
Dale Adelmann, conductor

Sunday, November 6, 2022 at 4:00 p.m.

A worship service remembering those who have died during the past year.

On All Saints’ Sunday, November 6 at 4:00 p.m., the Cathedral will offer a Choral Requiem Eucharist in remembrance of members and friends of the Cathedral who have died during the past year. The image-rich and comforting texts of the Requiem mass – the ancient Christian burial service – will be prayed this year using the music of Requiem by Gabriel Fauré (1845-1924) sung by the Cathedral Choir and accompanied by a chamber orchestra and organ. Whether you attend to mourn, to accompany those who are mourning, or simply to contemplate the mystery of heaven, we hope you will be comforted, inspired, and strengthened by it. This service will be livestreamed at cathedralATL.org/worship.

All worship services at the Cathedral of St. Philip are admission free, and all are welcome.

The orchestra is underwritten as a gift to the community by Friends of Cathedral Music at the Cathedral of St. Philip.

HANDEL’S MESSIAH

Atlanta Baroque Orchestra and the Cathedral Schola

Julie Andrijeski and Dale Adelmann, directors
Raha Mirzadegan, soprano
Raquel Winnica Young, alto
Karim Sulayman, tenor
Mischa Bouvier, bass

Friday, November 18, 2022 at 7:30 p.m.
Saturday, November 19, 2022 at 2:00 p.m.

Sure, you’ve heard Handel’s Messiah, but have you heard it in its entirety? Have you heard its original version, premiered in Dublin in 1742? Have you had the pleasure of hearing it played on historical gut-strung instruments and natural trumpets, with a Grammy Award winner among the soloists and a choir that will take extra care to nuance the vocal lines according to eighteenth-century performance practices, all geared to deliver this amazing story in the manner that scholars might contend the composer imagined it? Now is your chance! ABO Artistic Director Julie Andrijeski and Cathedral Canon for Music Dale Adelmann share leadership as the ABO joins forces with the Cathedral Schola and soloists Raha Mirzadegan, soprano; Raquel Winnica Young, alto; Karim Sulayman, tenor; and Mischa Bouvier, bass to bring you a uniquely moving performance of Handel’s greatest hit. Indeed, there was such enthusiasm for the premiere of Handel’s Messiah that ticket holders were requested to leave their swords and dress hoops at home to make way for the over-capacity crowd! So come as you are… you won’t want to miss this extravaganza that will “charm the ravished Heart and Ear” and bring “exquisite Delight” to all (Dublin Journal, 1742).

Co-sponsored by Friends of Cathedral Music and the Atlanta Baroque Orchestra.

ADVENT PROCESSION WITH LESSONS AND CAROLS

Cathedral Choir

Caroline Robinson & Jack Mitchener, organ
Dale Adelmann, conductor

Sunday, November 27, 2022 at 4:00 p.m.

This service is a wonderful opportunity to retreat from the hectic pace of the season and contemplate its true meaning. Organized around the O Antiphons – beautiful plainchant texts which invoke the Messiah to return, sung since the 8th century at Vespers on the seven evenings leading up to Christmas – the choir gradually moves into the chancel, stopping at various stations around the Cathedral nave. Each of the biblical prophecies is expanded upon by the singing of carols, anthems, and hymns which anticipate the coming of Christ, culminating in a glorious setting of the Magnificat (The Song of Mary, Luke 1:46-55) and the singing of “O come, O come, Emmanuel,” the text of which is an English translation of the very O Antiphons that the choir has sung throughout the service. Admission is free, and all are welcome!

ATLANTA SUMMER ORGAN FESTIVAL RECITAL

Damin Spritzer, organ

Wednesday, June 28, 2023 at 7:30 p.m.

While a recital by Damin Spritzer always includes staples of the organ repertory – played with precision, elegance, and conviction – it is the not-often-heard works on her charming programs that raise curiosity in a wonderfully refreshing way. Organists’ Review described Damin’s performances as “spellbinding…and fascinating…on so many levels.” She has championed and brought to renewed life the works of René Louis Becker, Pierre Kunc, and Mel Bonis (France), Harvey Grace and Alec Rowley (Britain), and Mary Howe (United States), among other lesser-known organ composers. Her five CDs containing this music are heralded in every major pipe organ publication. And without a single spotlight, she lights up the stage and captures the audience the second the doors open! She is represented in North America exclusively by Phillip Truckenbrod Concert Artists, LLC.

Presented by Delbert Lowell Jacks in memory of Thomas Ruben Jones, and Friends of Cathedral Music.

Suggested donation $15 at the door.
