The Cathedral’s own Assistant Organist-Choirmaster, Dr. Patrick A. Scott, will open this season’s Sunday Afternoon Recital Series on Sunday, September 13 at 3:15 p.m. A graduate of Birmingham-Southern University and the University of Texas, Patrick was one of the last students of the great improviser, organist, teacher, composer, and church musician, Dr. Gerre Hancock, and Patrick’s improvisations have proven him to be Dr. Hancock’s true successor. His program will consist of Alexandre Guilmant’s First Organ Sonata—probably more frequently heard in its orchestral arrangement—and will close with an improvisation on a submitted theme. There is no charge for these Sunday afternoon concerts.
Following the recital, at 4 p.m. the Cathedral resumes our weekly service of Choral Evensong, sung this week by the Cathedral Schola. For more information, go to stphilipscathedral.org/music.
