Atlanta Summer Organ Festival Recital
Bálint Karosi

Bálint Karosi has been Cantor and Director of Music at Saint Peter’s Church in New York City since 2015. After winning the 2008 Bach Prize in Leipzig, Bálint has been in demand as a recitalist and clinician worldwide and widely known and respected for his interpretation of Bach’s music and his Baroque-inspired improvisations. His recording portfolio of albums on the Hungaroton label includes his original orchestral works and thirteen albums of the complete works for organ by J. S. Bach. Bálint was appointed to the faculty of the Organ Department at the University of Michigan, where he will teach organ literature, church music, and improvisation starting August 2023. He is celebrated for his great skill in organ improvisation, and is a prolific, award-winning composer across instrumental and vocal mediums. Bálint studied at the Liszt Academy in his native Budapest, Hungary, the Conservatoire Supérieur in Geneva, Switzerland, and at the Oberlin Conservatory in Ohio. He earned his DMA in composition at the Yale School of Music in 2017.

The Atlanta Baroque Orchestra kicks off its 25th anniversary season in partnership with the Choir & Schola of the Cathedral of St. Philip, Atlanta, to present Handel’s magnificent Coronation anthems Zadok the Priest and The King Shall Rejoice, plus his Overture to Esther, The Arrival of the Queen of Sheba, Organ Concerto (Opus 4 No. 2 in B flat), and J.S. Bach's Orchestral Suite No. 3 in D.
G.F. Handel’s exhilarating Zadok the Priest opens the program. Composed for King George II and his consort Queen Caroline in 1727, this immensely popular anthem has been performed at every subsequent English monarch’s coronation, including that of the newly crowned King Charles III.
The program features many of Handel’s most beloved orchestral works. Caroline Robinson, the Cathedral’s superb organist and an international recitalist in her own right, will be featured in Handel’s Organ Concerto Op. 4 No. 2 in B-flat Major. Bach’s Orchestra Suite No. 3 will enthrall audiences with its rich instrumentation, including the rare appearance of three baroque trumpets and timpani. This blockbuster concert is not to be missed!

Draw on Sweet Night

A place inhabited by the moon and stars, by solitude, dreams, fears and prayers, the night has given us centuries of exquisite poetry and music. This nocturnal program features a wide-ranging repertoire stretching from Venetian renaissance composer, Giovanni Croce, to the contemporary cross-genre American Pulitzer Prize winner, Caroline Shaw, and rising young English composer, Kerensa Briggs. The sacred portion of the program takes us from the end of day into night, praying for God’s protection during sleep and giving thanks for Christ the morning star. The concert will also include selections from VOCES8 arrangements of pop and jazz feature swing tunes, ballads, and even James Bond songs.

One of the most moving choral services of the year, this meditation employs lessons & carols, spirituals, anthems, motets, and congregational hymns to illuminate the Passion of Christ, which is retold using biblical narratives from Mark, Matthew, and John, sung to some of the most ancient plainchant known to the Church.
